How to reduce and control frizz?

WHAT IS FRIZZ, EXACTLY?

First of all, let’s clarify what frizz is. Frizz occurs when the hair’s outer layer, called the cuticle, lifts and then allows moisture to penetrate. The result is that the hair becomes dry and puffs up.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF FRIZZ?

There are several causes of unwanted frizz:

  • Dehydrated hair (frizzy and/or thick hair is more likely to be thirsty)
  • Friction on fabrics (clothing, pillowcases, coats, etc.)
  • Some dehydrating medications
  • Damage caused by heat or chemical treatments

HOW CAN FRIZZ BE PREVENTED OR REDUCED?

Fortunately, there are effective ways to control frizz! Start with a shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type. There’s a wide range of products designed specifically to smooth out frizz. Once a week, replace the conditioner with a hair moisturizing mask. When getting out of the shower, reach for a microfiber towel, rather than a terry cloth one, which causes friction.

When detangling your hair, use a brush that will let you gently untangle the knots. Before styling your hair, it’s crucial that you apply a smoothing thermal protecting cream. The cream formula will provide additional moisture.

Think about turning down the temperature of all the hot tools you use. Tip: if you use a dryer, finish your blowout with a blast of cool air to seal the cuticle and optimize shine!

Complete your routine with a hair oil that will seal your hair’s softness and shine. To eliminate stubborn frizz, apply a light mist of hairspray and then run your hand over your hair’s outer layer.
