Hair colouring and allergic reactions: precautions and prevention

Allergic reactions linked to hair colouring occur the same way as any other type of allergy (food, seasonal, animal, etc.). The immune system suddenly has an excessive reaction to contact with a given substance. This reaction can come in different forms and vary in intensity.

FREQUENCY

Every year, millions of persons use hair colouring and only a small proportion experience severe reactions after contact with a substance. Such cases are indeed extremely rare. However, the consequences can be serious and, in some instances, even require medical care. Definitely to be prevented!

REDUCING THE RISKS

Always wear gloves, preferably nitrile ones.
Following the instructions, perform an allergy alert test.
Carefully read and follow the product instructions.
Comply with the indicated pause time.
In case of contact with the eyes or skin, rinse immediately and thoroughly with water.

HYPERSENSITIVITY TEST

The ultimate way to prevent allergic reactions remains the skin patch test, performed at least 48 hours before colouring. While this test is essential, it does not fully guarantee there will be no allergic reaction during colouring. Ideally, the test should be repeated with each use since an allergy may develop suddenly.

Since experimenting differs from one hair color to another, it is strongly recommended that you read the instructions specific to your product and follow them closely.
